THE case against a prison warder who was arrested in the Barberton maximum security prison after he was allegedly found in possession of dagga was postponed.
Patson Nyathi, 38, appeared briefly in the Barberton magistrate's court yesterday and his case was postponed to June 10.
Nyathi is out on a R500 bail, while his case has been adjourned in order to allow the police to conduct further investigations.
Nyathi was arrested on March 14 after the police received a tip-off about the alleged dagga business he was operating inside the prison.
Barberton police spokesperson Sergeant Jabu Ndubane said Nyathi was arrested after an informer blew the whistle in the prison, which resulted in a special search operation.
"The suspect is alleged to have been found in possession of dagga packets with an estimated street value of about R2000," Ndubane said .
She said the police were called in to the prison where the warder was handed over to them and taken to the Barberton police station.
Prison spokesperson Ruben Mvula confirmed that the guard had been suspended.
"We are still waiting for the results of the internal investigation that we have conducted, and then we will take it from there," Mvula said.
