TWO police officers were shot and wounded after they had stopped an armed robbery near Katlehong in Ekurhuleni in the early hours of yesterday, Gauteng police said.

About 10 men armed with rifles robbed a garage in Moleleki Extension 2 at 2am. They were interrupted by the arrival of the police, said Captain Godfrey Maditsi.

"The robbers started shooting at the police and the police shot back. Two of the police were wounded," he said.

The men had began to attach explosives to the garage's ATM when the police arrived.

After shooting the police officers, the robbers took money from the garage and fled in three cars, one of them a Corsa bakkie. The bakkie was found later abandoned in Thokoza at Hostel Three. - Sapa
