'Infant mortality is human rights issue'

KWAZULU-NATAL MEC for health Sibongiseni Dhlomo says maternal, peri-natal and infant mortality are human rights issues.

KWAZULU-NATAL MEC for health Sibongiseni Dhlomo says maternal, peri-natal and infant mortality are human rights issues.

The MEC was speaking yesterday at a report-back discussion on the urgent Indaba he called for last month to address how maternal and child deaths can be reduced.

The Indaba was convened following reports on the Fourth Confidential Enquiry into Maternal Deaths into the causes of mothers and babies dying during pregnancy at, or after birth.

The report highlighted that there had been a 20 percent increase in the number of maternal deaths nationally, and that the top main causes include non-pregnancy-related infections (mainly HIV) that accounted for 43,7percent of deaths.

Unexplained stillbirths contributed to the high number of deaths.
