SOUTH African movie mogul Anant Singh's films are again featuring at the Cannes Film Festival this year, but this time on a larger scale.
The festival, which started on Wednesday and runs until May 23, is in its 63rd year. Every year it attracts the who's who of the international movie industry to France and Singh's entourage is already there.
Though Singh and his Video Vision Entertainment team have had a consistent corporate presence in Cannes for almost 30 years, this year's offerings will be their most "significant slate ever".
Their films include The First Grader, Jozi, Outrageous and My Hunter's Heart, and the The Bang Bang Club. TheFirst Grader, inspired by a true story, is directed by Justin Chadwick.
Jozi, which uses the city of Johannesburg as a backdrop for its narrative, is a fresh, innovative comedy directed by Craig Freimond and produced by Singh, Helena Spring and Robbie Thorpe, while Outrageous is a comedy show that brings together some of the country's best stand-up comics.
"We are proud to have the most significant slate ever in Cannes, and to be showcasing South African talent to the world. We look forward to discussing distribution arrangements with the international distributors in Cannes," said Singh.
"The South African film industry has developed rapidly over the last few years and we, as an industry, are very grateful for the support received from the Department of Trade and Industry and the National Film and Video Foundation, supported by the Department of Arts and Culture. We are also pleased that the Minister of Trade and Industry, Rob Davies, will be attending the festival, an indication of the importance attached to the film industry," he added.
