THE Eastern Cape housing department said it was rectifying defects on 20 000 government-built houses.

THE Eastern Cape housing department said it was rectifying defects on 20 000 government-built houses.

The defects were largely due to "shoddy workmanship by contractors and a lack of monitoring by building inspectors", provincial housing department spokesperson Lwandile Sicwetsha said in a statement yesterday.

To remedy this the department is hosting a workshop for hundreds of building inspectors to "improve their acumen" in inspecting government-built houses in the province.

"The workshop focuses on reaching a consensus on what constitutes a complete housing unit ... it will also equip all technical staff to understand what is required from them in terms of national building regulations," Sicwetsha said.

The workshop, under way in East London, was expected to be concluded today. - Sapa
