Lieutenant-Colonel Vincent Mdunge said yesterday: "The police s were patrolling the Nongoma area when they spotted a van with a Free State registration number and three cows. It was immediately discovered that they had been stolen."
He said the men, who were caught on Wednesday, lied about having bought the cattle.
"It was found that they had been stolen on the border between KwaZulu-Natal and Swaziland.
"They branded the cows to make it difficult to trace the animals," Mdunge said.
He said stock theft was a major problem in KwaZulu-Natal. They were following up leads that would see more people arrested.
The Department of Agriculture recently announced that KwaZulu-Natal farmers lost R109million through stock theft between 2008 and 2009.
Losses in 2008-09 amounted to R365million nationally. - Sapa
