The Idols hopefuls are heading to Sun City in North West for more judging. The number will be whittled down to 24 just before the live show in July.
M-Net publicist Ingrid Engelbrecht said: "We will be taking them to Sun City for a week before the end of this month. This is where people who are really talented will be chosen.
"We have not decided on the number of the people who will go live. It might be the top 12 or top 10, but we are still in discussion."
Idols judge Mara Louw said: "We're going to be tough in the next round at Sun City. We're not interested in hearing heart-warming stories - we just want people who can perform when the pressure is on.
"This is because the pressure only gets worse once you're a professional performer."
Judge Gareth Cliff said: "I am very pleased with the people we've put through. I'm actually looking forward to seeing these singers perform again at Sun City."
The 98 were chosen at auditions in Durban, Johannesburg, Port Elizabeth, Cape Town and Bloemfontein.
Engelbrecht said 5394 contestants entered for the sixth season of Idols this year - 2000 more than last year.
This season's winner will walk away with a brand new Ford Figo worth R500000, courtesy of Ford SA, as well as a recording contract with Sony Music.
