HUNDREDS of disgruntled residents of Mkuze took to the streets on Tuesday to complain about lack of service delivery.

They also called for the resignation of IFP-led uMkhanyakude district municipality mayor Lawrence Mthombeni.

Though the march was organised by the ANC it comes two weeks after the local leadership of the IFP resolved that the executive committee of the municipality be overhauled or reshuffled due to lack of service delivery.

Topping the residents' grievances was the shortage of water.

Zanele Makhanya said they had been patient for far too long, hoping that things would get better.

"Our municipality has failed dismally in providing us with services," Makhanya said.

"We are not demanding luxuries, but basic things such as water. For almost two months now the Mosford and Bethesda hospitals have been without water.

"Local schools have also been largely affected."

She said they wanted Mthombeni to resign and have asked MEC for cooperative governance and traditional affairs Nomusa Dube, pictured, to intervene and take over the municipality.

When contacted for comment, Mthombeni said he was attending a local government conference and could not comment.

Acting municipal manager Mpume Manqele, who accepted the memorandum, acknowledged the water shortage problem, which he attributed to the drought.
