HAWKERS are demanding a piece of the cake from the World Cup stalls erected at the new Peter Mokaba Sports Complex.

They have vowed to boycott the tournament if they are not given a share of the expected business.

The Limpopo SMME and Hawkers Association (Lisha) said it wanted the host, Polokwane municipality, to consider them more than any other person because they were the only traders doing business in the city.

Lisha spokesperson Welly Manaka said it would be a big blunder for the municipality to issue permits to people who were not even selling on the streets for soccer fans.

He said should the council sideline them and give the permits to other people, they would "have no option but to disrupt activities during the World Cup".

There were fears among hawkers on Tuesday that the council would issue permits at prices they would not afford.

But the council said permit prices would be reasonable and affordable for hawkers.

Municipality spokesperson Phuti Lekganyane said a company appointed to deal with hawkers would make permits available for all known street sellers

However, he warned that a selection would be made as per the hawkers' products when making allocations.
