HOSTING the Fifa World Cup presents a wonderful tried and tested opportunity to unify a nation.

This was the message of Mexican ambassador to South Africa Luis Gabriela ahead of his country's opening match against South Africa at Soccer City on June 11.

"It is an honour for us to play in the World Cup opening match," he said. "We hosted the World Cup in 1970 and 1986. The feeling was great.

"The World Cup helped bring our people together. We expect 15 000 fans from Mexico to come here. It will be a great tournament."

Meanwhile, the LOC's Danny Jordaan said they were happy that the classy Gautrain will begin operating on June 8 between Sandton and OR Tambo International Airport.

And LOC security manager Mlungisi Ncane said security was on track after they spoke with agents of the 31 countries playing in the event.
