DAIHATSU South Africa has introduced its Terios Special Edition in typical survivor style.
The launch last week started in Boksburg and went through most parts of Joburg as we looked for clues.
This, according to Diahatsu SA, was to prove the Terios' capabilities both on and off the road.
My team had a difficult time. The first code we cracked was to go to Nelson Mandela Square in Sandton where we took a picture.
From there we became more confident as we headed for Soweto to visit Chris Hani-Baragwanath Hospital.
At Bara we took a picture and left the township. How wrong was that since were supposed to have gone bungee jumping at the Orlando FNB Tower afterwards. By that time the Terios proved to be a fuel saver of note.
The launch covered a lot of city driving and the Terios demonstrated its double identity - being both an offroader and city car. Towards the end of our hectic day the teams were sent to an offroad area outside Benoni to rescue a Terios stuck in mud.
After the physically hard work of saving the Japanese car, it was off to Meadowdale for a few laps on a track.
By the end of everything, the Terios had proved to be a tough little vehicle for all daily challenges.
The Terios Special Edition was launched to complete the range that was introduced late last year.
Both the exterior and interior of the Daihatsu Terios have a fresh look, with projector headlights offering better field of vision and higher intensity lighting as well as some interior upgrades.
In the interior there are now four airbags, different seat materials and climate control.
The Terios is loaded with all the extras, such as climate control, front and rear power windows, and front and rear accessory power outlets for GPS or camping fridges.
It also has electric exterior mirrors, remote central locking, radio/CD player - MP3 - compatible audio system and has audio controls on the steering wheel. Both the steering and the driver seat are height adjustable and there are no fewer than six cup holders.
More great convenience is the remote transponder with immobiliser (VESA 4), reclining rear seats plus other practical features such as fog lamps and roof rails. It is powered by a VVT, 1,5-litre engine which produces 80kW and 141Nm of torque.
