Commonwealth spot on the line for netball squad

NATIONAL netball team coach Carin Strauss is hoping her charges will do well during their tour of New Zealand next month so they can move up one notch in the world rankings and qualify for the Commonwealth Games.

Strauss said the sixth-ranked South Africans will leave for New Zealand on June 11 for training sessions, friendly matches and a two-Test series against Samoa.

"We will be involved in an intensive training camp and attend coaching clinics hosted by international coaches with special focus on defence," Strauss said yesterday.

"We will play friendly matches against New Zealand netball team Mystics, which boasts international players from Jamaica, Samoa, England and New Zealand.

"It will be good for our players to play against quality players from Mystics, and doing well against them will be enough motivation going into the our Test series against Samoa.

"We are confident that after the Test series matches we will move a notch up on the International Federation of Netball Associations rankings."

The South Africans were hoping to improve their world ranking at Malawi's expense in a three-Test series in Durban last month, but the fifth-placed Malawians did not turn up.
