A MAN accused of shooting his girlfriend and leaving her paralysed after she allegedly told him their affair was over, appeared briefly in the Mapulaneng magistrate's court yesterday.

Hlawuleka Mkhabela, 32, was not asked to plead to a charge of attempted murder. He was remanded in custody pending his next court appearance on Thursday for a formal bail application.

He allegedly shot Thandi Thabethe, 30, on January 2 after she had left his house in which they stayed together at Saselani village near Bushbuckridge.

Thabethe left for her family home in nearby Rhelani village but Mkhabela allegedly followed and shot her several times in the body before running away.

"We only managed to arrest the suspect on Thursday after he s disappeared on January 2. He is expected to apply for bail on Thursday," Bushbuckridge police spokesman Inspector Donald Mabaso said yesterday.

Mabaso warned other criminals on the run from the law to turn themselves in to police.
