"We do not have mafias in the ANC, rather we have members who serve the ANC," spokesperson Dumisa Ntuli said.
Mashatile retained his position as chairperson, beating his deputy, Premier Nomvula Mokonyane.
DA spokesperson Jack Bloom said Mashatile's re-election reflected poorly on the ANC, given his "poor governance record" and "fishy tenders awarded to his network of friends in the so-called 'Alex Mafia'".
He said he anticipated that a provincial cabinet re-shuffle would take place soon, adding that health and social development MEC Qedani Mahlangu would likely be "booted out" due to "brave steps to root out corrupt activities".
Bloom said Mashatile's re-election would have a negative effect on Mokonyane's anti-corruption drive.
Ntuli said the DA's use of the word "mafia" linked the party's new leadership to "criminality, drugs and gangsterism".
"This is unacceptable and disingenuous because no single leader in Gauteng has ever been apprehended or tried in a court of law for a criminal offence or selling drugs." - Sapa
