300 goats killed after N3 accident

MORE than 300 goats headed for a livestock farm in Eston, KwaZulu-Natal, had to be killed after the truck carrying them overturned.

ER24's Derrick Banks said the driver and conductor of the vehicle were seriously injured in the crash that occurred when the truck careened out of control. Banks said the accident happened on the N3 south bound near Umlaas Road yesterday at about 8am.

"ER24 paramedics arrived on the scene to find the truck lying on its side on top of the Armco barrier," he said.

"The driver and conductor were found outside the vehicle and had sustained serious injuries. Advanced life support intervention had to be performed before they were taken to Pietermaritzburg Medi-Clinic for further medical care."

The Durban and Coast SPCA were called in to euthanise the seriously injured animals.

Senior inspector Dougie du Plessis said the 300 goats were badly hurt and could not be saved.

"We had to put them down on the scene, a process that took many hours.

"Many of them had broken legs and even though we would have liked to have saved them, we could not."

Traffic on the N3 came to a standstill during morning peak-hour traffic while rescue workers cleared the wreckage of the truck and tried to capture the wandering goats that had managed to escape injury.
