Bidvest Wits captain Tefu Mashamaite believes his charges should improve their scoring skills if they hope to win games within 90 minutes.
This was evident in Saturday's Ke Yona quarterfinal when The Students were forced into a penalty shootout by National First Division opponents, FC Cape Town.
The Clever Boys eventually scraped to a 4-3 win. The game had ended goalless in regulation time and 30 extra minutes were added but the scoreboard remained the same.
Marawaan Bantam, Fabrico Rodrigues, Sifiso Vilakazi and Patrick Phungwayo were on target for Wits while Marchelino Fransch, Lyle Lackay and Marcy Johnson converted penalties for the first division side.
Mashamaite said the game would not have gone into extra time had his side been sharper in front of goal.
"We should have wrapped-up the game in regulation time. We had our opponents under pressure and created numerous scoring opportunities," he said.
"But we let them off the hook as we fired blanks in front of goal. And that was not good enough.
"It is back to the drawing board and I hope we rectify those mistakes ahead of the all-important semifinal this week."
Wits striker Thando Mngomeni and Morne Davids of FC Cape Town were both sent off by referee Matthew Dyer for second bookable offences in the 81st minute and 115th minute.
