PRESIDENT Jacob Zuma faces his first open rebellion as the ANC in Gauteng converges for its 11th elective conference at the Pretoria showgrounds.

Zuma appointed Nomvula Mokonyane as premier despite opposition from some ANC branches who wanted Paul Mashatile on the top job.

This was after Mashatile had acted as premier following Mbhazima Shilowa's departure to form Cope.

In the Eastern Cape, supporters of ANC chairperson Phumulo Masualle have demanded a recall of premier Noxolo Kiviet after the ANC national general congress in Durban in September.

A similar plan to recall Mokonyane has been mooted by Mashatile backers in Gauteng if Mashatile is re-elected as provincial chairperson.
