Mashatile warns of losing state direction

GAUTENG ANC chairperson Paul Mashatile said yesterday that revolutionary parties were at risk of being kicked out of power because they had failed to improve the lives of people.

GAUTENG ANC chairperson Paul Mashatile said yesterday that revolutionary parties were at risk of being kicked out of power because they had failed to improve the lives of people.

Addressing delegates at the party's provincial conference in Tshwane, Mashatile said: "Many revolutionary parties, after 20 years in power, tend to lose state power as a result of not focusing on the strategic tasks of the revolution.

"The strategies are the total emancipation of the oppressed masses. Let us not suffer the same fate."

Mashatile said ANC members should ask themselves whether they were doing enough to advance the cause of the poor and to preserve the legacy of Nelson Mandela.

"Is the ANC a formidable force capable of leading and transforming South African society to ensure a better life for all?"

He said millions of people had access to housing, clean water, sanitation and electricity.

"We must, however, intensify our programme to eradicate informal settlements in our province by 2014, create new human settlements and provide land and tenure to enable people to build their own houses."

Mashatile said employment opportunities had been created through the Gautrain, the freeway improvement scheme and the building of hospitals in Soweto and Ekurhuleni.

He said women were the bedrock of society and addressing their plight was a priority.
