Dr Death in bid to halt probe

WOUTER Basson's high court application to stop the Health Professions Council of SA from investigating his involvement in Project Coast was an "abusive process", counsel for the HPCSA said yesterday.

WOUTER Basson's high court application to stop the Health Professions Council of SA from investigating his involvement in Project Coast was an "abusive process", counsel for the HPCSA said yesterday.

"The matter is so devoid of merit that not only should it be dismissed, but ... the applicant should pay the cost," said Gilbert Marcus, representing the HPCSA.

He said the application in the high court in Pretoria was an "opportunistic attempt to buy time. Nothing more, nothing less".

The HPCSA had since 2000 been investigating Basson (Dr Death), who headed Project Coast - the apartheid government's biological and chemical weapons programme. He was acquitted in 2002 on criminal charges related to his position.

Marcus said the application was premature as the HPCSA members responsible for making a decision on Basson's guilt had not made any decision yet.

Proceedings continue on Monday. - Sapa
