Council slashes traffic fines by half

MOTORISTS that have received traffic fines in Mogale City in Krugersdorp should thank their lucky stars as the municipality has decided to slash the fines by half.

MOTORISTS that have received traffic fines in Mogale City in Krugersdorp should thank their lucky stars as the municipality has decided to slash the fines by half.

"We urge all motorists to take this wonderful opportunity and pay their outstanding fines before the grace period expires," said the municipality's Marietjie Steyn.

She said the municipality applied to the National Prosecuting Authority to have all fines cut by half.

"We are going on a new system. We are cleaning the old system, so we wanted to start on a clean slate," said Steyn.

She said the cut was only applicable on Section 341 Notices (fines) issued until March 31 this year.

"Motorists that received traffic fines in Mogale City have the opportunity from April 30 to June 30 to pay only 50 percent on the total amount of all their outstanding fines," she said.

However, Steyn said consideration would not be given to cases that are already at warrant stage or where contempt of court was payable.

"This is because that money is no longer paid to the municipality but to the courts."
