BHEKUMUZI Sibiya's short film, Father Christmas Doesn't Come Here, has scooped another international accolade.
The film, released last year. won the Best Narrative for a Short Film award at the Tribeca Film Festival. The festival took place in the US from April 22 to May 2.
The film, one of the indigenous language short film contest winners, was funded by the NFVF and written by Bongi Ndaba and Sibongile Nkosana.
It features actors such as Jabu Sibisi, Thembi Sibisi, Mthandeni Mvelase and Slindile Nodangala of Generations.
The annual Tribeca Film Festival was launched in 2002 to enable the international film community and public to experience the power of film by redefining the film festival experience.
Father Christmas Doesn't Come Here is tells the story of a young black girl with low self-esteem, who writes a letter to Father Christmas asking for long, straight hair for Christmas.
Her dream is almost ruined by a cynical man who tells her that Father Christmas does not exist. She is forced to reconcile images of Christmas and Santa Claus with her life in South Africa, while her grandmother must ruefully observe and assist the girl in her dreams.
This makes her resort to extremes to achieve her goal. With the help of her grandmother she recovers from the ordeal of not knowing how to love herself. She also learns that being beautiful isn't about what you look like but about being yourself.
The film also won the Tri-Contintental Film Festival late last year and is being included in the South African lineup event at Cannes this year.
