COSATU in Gauteng will support Paul Mashatile in the coming ANC leadership elections, it said yesterday.

Cosatu Gauteng "preferred" Mashatile over Premier Nomvula Mokonyane, said general secretary Dumisani Dakile. Mokonyane is Mashatile's main opponent for the position. The election is scheduled to take place at the weekend.

"The provincial executive committee had resolved that the (ANC) provincial conference is a critical area that cannot be left on its own, hence we believe that a number of implications may arise from this conference which have a direct impact on us as workers," Dakile said.

Cosatu Gauteng had taken into account a number of principles in deciding who to back, he said. These included that leaders support ANC unity, be pro-worker and working class and respect and value the tripartite alliance.

Cosatu Gauteng backed Tshwane mayor Gwen Ramakgopa as deputy chairperson, David Makhura as provincial secretary, Panyaza Lesufi as deputy secretary and Anilah Rantolase as treasurer. - Sapa
