THE situation at the ZCC-owned Marobathota High School, east of Polokwane is expected to return to normal after a visit by Limpopo MEC for education .
Namane Masemola visited the troubled school yesterday to brief teachers and pupils about the outcome of a meeting between the department and the church council on Tuesday.
The visit followed after pupils had locked some of the teachers out of the school's premises on Monday and Tuesday, accusing them of being lazy. The teachers had "refused" to teach after they protested against the appointment of an acting principal.
The person appointed is a member of the Professional Educators Union, while the teachers belong to the South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu). He is also a member of the ZCC.
The teachers were allegedly unhappy at his appointment and demanded that a candidate recommended by Sadtu be appointed.
The position became vacant when the previous principal retired because of ill-health.
It was resolved during the meeting that an official from the department would be appointed as acting principal for three months. T he post would be advertised and filled during that period.
Masemola said the official would start at the school tomorrow. "We also want to reaffirm our position that teachers should be able to do catch-up programmes so that pupils do not lag behind in terms of their syllabus."
