BEFORE the little Argentinian named Lionel Messi stole the limelight, Cristiano Ronaldo was the world's best player.

While still a Manchester United player under the watchful eye of Sir Alex Ferguson, the Portuguese winger was a marvel to watch. He was quick to shed the "show pony" label and turned into a useful team player.

His displays for the Red Devils saw his value skyrocketing and soon Real Madrid came sniffing. Despite some resistance from United and Ronaldo himself declaring publicly his burning desire to play for Madrid, it soon became clear that he was going to be one of Real Madrid president's Florentino Perez latest galactico.

The club spent $132million (R975million) to bring the player to the Santiago Bernabeu and he was unveiled in front of an 80000 capacity crowd. But the winger has not exactly set the scene alight and Madrid fans jeered him during their loss to Barca. But he has been showing flashes of the brilliance that made him the world's best footballer and having failed to win the 2006 World Cup, he will be hoping to steer his country to victory in SA.
