The minnows of world cricket, Afghanistan are playing in a major tournament for the first time and their seven-wicket loss to India on Saturday confirms the South Africans should walk it.
But the Proteas won't be taking the game lightly. After their loss to India by 14 runs on Sunday, they know they have to produce the goods today.
Referring to the loss, coach Corrie van Zyl told Sowetan from the Caribbean yesterday: "We are obviously disappointed and feel we did not play particularly well. But we know a victory over Afghanistan will put us in the Super 8 with all teams level and start from scratch again."
With the squad of 15 all fit and raring to go, the coach and captain Graeme Smith will have to put on their thinking caps and come up with a settled, winning side.
Assessing today's clash, Van Zyl said: "Barbados is a smaller ground than St Lucia and the pitch has been different in our warm-up matches, so it will be a case of horses for courses. We will choose the best side suited to those particular conditions.
"We have to win. It is important that we set the standard for the rest of the tournament," the coach said.
Against India the South African bowling attack was wayward, conceding a staggering 70 runs in just five overs. It is something they need to tighten up and which management is focusing on.
