Pensioner smiles again

A DOBSONVILLE, Soweto, pensioner who thought a Postbank official had defrauded him of his pension payout has now been redressed.

A DOBSONVILLE, Soweto, pensioner who thought a Postbank official had defrauded him of his pension payout has now been redressed.

Last month, Niklaas Shabele's family had to rely on food hand-outs from neighbours and relatives after R1000 had been fraudulently withdrawn from his Postbank account.

The 72-year-old Shabele said he almost had a heart attack when a Postbank official told him his grant had been withdrawn.

He said he was not told when and where his money was withdrawn until last week when his son enquired on his behalf.

Shabele gets his grant two days after his wife receives hers, and by then, they had already spent his wife's money.

He said he went to withdraw R1000 from Dobsonville Postbank on March 7. But after entering his pin number he was told his request exceeded his limit as he had a balance of R108.

Shabele said the teller could not tell him when and where his grant was withdrawn but advised him to come back a day later.

SA Post Office spokesperson Lungile Lose confirmed Shabele tried to withdraw money from his account but was unsuccessful.

Lose said the balance in Shabele's account had been corrected.

Postbank had since contacted Shabele to inform him about the correction. They also apologised for the inconvenience to him.
