NEWLY established pay television channel TopTV has been hit by teething problems within three days of it starting operations.

NEWLY established pay television channel TopTV has been hit by teething problems within three days of it starting operations.

Launched on Thursday, their call centre crashed on Monday morning due to an avalanche of calls. Since it started operating on Saturday the pay channel has received 1500 calls an hour.

Spokesperson Melinda Conor said: "Our call centre has crashed because of the many calls. To be honest, we never anticipated such a response. Our experts are busy trying to sort everything out.

"About 8000 voice mail messages are left in our voice boxes every hour. While trying to answer calls, we also have to return calls, she said.

Connor said they brought in about 50 more people to help the 35 they already had.

The roll-over of the television channel was successful and the response has been overwhelming, Connor said.

"I want to tell our new subscribers and people interested in TopTV that we really appreciate their support and interest," Connor said.

"Unfortunately 1500 calls an hour is a lot for anyone to handle. TopTV is doing our absolute best."
