KwaZulu-Natal MEC for finance Ina Cronjé said yesterday her department wanted a new, improved database to serve the whole of the province.

From this month all existing suppliers will have to re-register.

"The new database will be a milestone towards achieving the provincial treasury's vision of being the centre of excellence in financial and fiscal management in South Africa."

She said the cleaning up and establishment of a new single suppliers' database for all provincial departments and municipalities would promote accountability and compliance.

"It will assist government with location information, and enable government institutions to rotate suppliers."

Cronjé said the current database lacked clarity, reporting capabilities for measuring broad-based black economic empowerment - and had no interface with external organisations like Sars.

"The new database has all the ingredients that will jack up supply chain management systems and induce responsible and wise spending of the public's money."

It would also enhance productivity and efficiency, she said.

"The database will be aligned with the provincial treasury objectives by creating a framework for a balance between basic service delivery and the growth of the provincial economy."

It would also help promote promote good governance, optimum financial and fiscal management and maintaining a culture of high performance, she said.

Cronjé urged all suppliers to provincial government departments who are currently registered on the existing database to re-register on the new system by completing a new ZNT registration form as soon as possible.

Only applications on the new form would be accepted, she said.
