Moripe agrees to stadium honour

SOUTH African soccer icon Lucas "Masterpieces" Moripe has reached an agreement with the City of Tshwane to rename Super Stadium after him.

The Atteridgeville venue will be officially renamed after Moripe at a function on May 16, which will be attended by President Jacob Zuma.

The ceremony will also be linked with the national prayer for the World Cup and Bafana Bafana.

Four years ago, the city wanted to rename the stadium after Moripe but the process was temporarily put on hold after he allegedly demanded R1million and a house.

At that stage, Moripe was represented by family members during the meeting with the council.

Tshwane 2010 World Cup chief executive Godfrey Nkwane said Moripe had given them the go-head to rename the stadium after him without conditions.

"We met him and the executive mayor (Gwen Ramokgopa) and he was over the moon," Nkwane said. "We were touched when he said he did not play alone. He said the honour symbolised all the players of his generation."
