MADRID - Valencia right-back Miguel knocked down two old ladies in a road accident yesterday, according to various Spanish media sources.

The Portuguese defender was driving to Valencia's training ground at Paterna, on the outskirts of the city, when he knocked down the two women.

The women have been taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Miguel made a statement about the accident to the police, which caused him to arrive late for training.

"I am worried and very affected by this," he said after training. "I want to apologise from my heart. It was an accident and I could not avoid it. "

The 29-year-old was involved in a serious breach of public order in a nightclub back in his native Lisbon in December.

Valencia are third in La Liga and therefore on course to secure direct access to the Champions League. - Sapa-DPA
