'away with two stream madness'

JOMO Cosmos boss Jomo Sono is among National First Division club officials who are calling for the Premier Soccer League to get rid of the promotion-relegation playoffs and revert to the one-stream format.

The old system gave the team that finished on top of the NFD log and the runners-up promotion to the top flight.

In turn, the two bottom clubs in the Premiership went directly to the NFD.

But the current system requires the winners of the Coastal and Inland streams to meet each other in a two-legged format in which the winner gains promotion to the elite league, replacing the club that finishes bottom of the Premiership log.

The loser of the first playoff gets a second chance to compete for Premiership qualification through the second group of playoff matches.

These matches include the runners-up of the two streams and the team that finishes 15th on the Premiership standings.

The winner secures passage to the elite league.

Mpumalanga Black Aces are still in the lucrative Premiership thanks to the much-criticised format.

Aces retained their Premiership status after playing just four matches of the playoffs.

The NFD officials raised their concerns yesterday ahead of the PSL's executive committee meeting in Johannesburg today.

"We must do away with the madness, I do not understand why clubs like Black Leopards and Carara Kicks lead all the way only to lose in the playoffs," Sono said.

"This is nonsense and should stop.

"But PSL chairperson Irvin Khoza has said that the issue of the two streams will be done away with after the World Cup, so we will see."

FC Cape Town's owner Errol Dick said: "Since we started with this format three seasons ago we have failed to attract sponsors because the system is not commercially viable."

United FC chairperson Amos Mahlamba said if the status quo remained the champions of each stream should automatically be promoted.

Nathi Lions boss Nathi Maphumulo said: "Clubs pay more money in the playoffs than in the league."

Leopards supremo David Thidiela refused to comment.
