6 cops up on drug charges

SIX Free State police officials appeared on drug-related charges in the Bloemfontein magistrate's court yesterday.

SIX Free State police officials appeared on drug-related charges in the Bloemfontein magistrate's court yesterday.

The men, released on bail, were arrested as part of a group of 14 suspects believed to belong to a drug syndicate linked to an international network.

Magistrate Carlos Frade postponed the matter to May 20 for further investigation.

The policemen - warrant officers Sello Johnson, Molatedi Motsamai, Gilbert Weimers, Pule Ningiza, Johannes Motsek and reservist Constable Canon Mcharlies - were awarded conditional bail of R2 000.

The state did not oppose bail but asked for certain conditions.

Earlier, police said the police officers were suspected of helping the syndicate transport drugs in and out of the Free State, using official vehicles while on duty.

Some of the arrested officers were also allegedly involved in corruption, defeating the ends of justice and contravening the Counterfeit Goods Act.

On Monday seven Nigerian nationals appeared in the Bloemfontein magistrate's court in connection with the same case.

Their case was postponed to May 11 for further investigation and they were remanded in custody.

Police seized two vehicles, an Opel Corsa and a Mazda sedan, and crack cocaine worth about R25000 when the group was arrested. - Sapa
