WITH the 2010 Fifa World Cup fever having gripped South Africa, East London will come alive this weekend with the Smirnoff 1818 Raga Bolo Street Soccer Challenge.

The national finals of this tournament will take place in Mdantsane on Saturday and Sunday where the overall winners will once more go to Brazil.

Day's Sports Tavern from Mpumalanga were crowned last year's champions and in August last year went to Brazil, where they also played three games against local teams.

Smirnoff brand manager Thami Silwana said a total of 18 teams will take part in this two-day tournament at Man Buy and Braai Place in Zone 15.

"Two from each of the nine provinces in South Africa have qualified for the national finals in Mdantsane, it is a five-a-side tournament

"The provincial winners and runners-up are going to Mdantsane. There is a league in all the provinces where 380 teams are participating.

"The league is open to players that are older than 25 years and it is the biggest soccer league with 336 teams and over 4700 players.

"Tavern teams are selected from 49 playing zones within 18 regions and they play against each other until the provincial champions are determined."
