What does a day in the life of a corporate affairs manager entail?
It is my duty to ensure RBCT is regarded as a responsible corporate citizen by engaging effectively and professionally with all our stakeholders, focusing on public relations tasks and attending to issues of sustainable community development.
Writing, representing RBCT in external forums, building and maintaining key stakeholder relationships and hosting international coal buyers at our terminal all form part of what I do on a regular basis.
Why did you decide on this career?
With good interpersonal skills, I am passionate about interacting with people from different backgrounds. I have a degree in communication science.
How did you get into this career?
It was a natural choice for me because I initially wanted to work as a journalist. I am quite happy I ended up in the corporate affairs environment since I am challenged.
What's challenging about the job?
With our limited budgets I ensure we work with stakeholders to ensure sustainable development in the communities in which we operate.
The needs in our country are so great and as RBCT we always wish we could do more.
We might not always support in cash donations but do in kind - or through expertise of our own employees.
What do you love most about your career?
Writing and networking. Seeing a community appreciative of a community project that we have assisted with. I also love hosting events.
What type of person would make a success of this position?
Anyone with good interpersonal skills and a passion for working with people and who can handle crisis situations in a calm manner.
What subjects do you need to pass in high school to be able to study towards this career?
English first language, business management, accounting and economics.
What does one study at tertiary level to get into this career?
I studied communication science and industrial sociology. At other institutions one can study public relations
What is the entry-level salary for this job?
I am not sure these days but back in 1999 when I started as a communications officer in government I earned R5500 a month.
I would like to think that the starting rates have improved since then.
