The European Athletics Council made the unanimous decision on Saturday after the Swiss athletics federation and city of Zurich presented their candidacy to host the 22nd edition of the event.
Zurich will be the second Swiss city to host European Athletics' flagship event after Bern hosted the fifth edition of the championships in 1954.
European Athletics president Hansjörg Wirz, also a Swiss, said they were pleased about the choice of Zurich. The Swiss city was seen as the most outstanding candidate to host the tournament. Barcelona will host this year's event in July. - Sowetan
