THE long-awaited armed robbery trial of four Limpopo men, including a 64-year-old man and a former multimillionaire businessman, starts today.
The case will be heard in the Mhala magistrate's court in Thulamahashe.
Businessman Nicholas Mgiba, 35, Willies Khoza, 64, Andrew Monareng, 25, and Jethro Chauke, 20, are accused of robbing the Acornhoek branch of Pep Stores on May 25 last year. They were arrested on different days after the armed robbery in which Khoza allegedly pretended to be a customer when he entered the store.
He allegedly fired a shot and threatened employees and a customer before locking his victims in a storeroom and taking R10000.
Khoza then allegedly ran towards a bakkie in the parking lot of the shopping complex and tried to jump into the back, but slipped and fell.
The bakkie, allegedly driven by Mgiba, drove off at high speed away from the scene.
Khoza ran to a nearby school but residents and the police gave chase.
Khoza was arrested in a classroom and a gun was found next to him. Further investigations led to the arrest of the three other suspects, said police Warrant Officer Themba Thwala.
