A SWASHBUCKLING knock of 101 by Suresh Raina in an Indian total of 186 was the impetus they needed to convincingly beat South Africa by 14 runs in their ICC World Twenty20 match at Beausejour Stadium, St Lucia, yesterday.

With India sent in to bat, Raina went hammer and tongs at an impotent South African attack.

The big over for the Indians came in the 18th when they pummelled debutant Rory Kleinveldt for 25 runs.

With a required run rate of just below 10 an over, it was always going to be a big ask for the Proteas and they got their innings off to a disastrous start when opener Loots Bosman (8) skied a delivery by Yusuf Pathan for a comfortable catch by Piyush Chawla in just the fifth over.

It was then a procession of wickets as first Graeme Smith (36), then Jacques Kallis (73), Albie Morkel (12) and AB de Villiers (31) headed back to the pavilion.

In other games at the weekend New Zealand beat Sri Lanka by two wickets, hosts West Indies pummelled Ireland by 70 runs and defending champions Pakistan overcame Bangladesh by 21 runs.
