Maleka puts Aces through

MPHO "Zico" Maleka's goalscoring prowess steered Mpumalanga Black Aces to the quarterfinals of the prestigious Nedbank Cup.

MPHO "Zico" Maleka's goalscoring prowess steered Mpumalanga Black Aces to the quarterfinals of the prestigious Nedbank Cup.

The striker's solitary goal sank Limpopo side Winnerspark yesterday.

The winner was Maleka's third goal in the tournament after grabbing a brace against FC Royal in the round of 32.

The first half yesterday was an evenly contested affair, especially in midfield.

But the finishing was not of the same high standard as the build-up play. That was until Maleka struck in the 24th minute.

The brave Winnerspark, who have been relegated to the Vodacom Promotional League, huffed and puffed for the rest of the match, with Noel Mwandila and Samuel Ramasoeu guilty of fluffing late chances to level the scores.

Winnerspark were also thwarted by Aces' goalkeeper Lee Harpur, who was voted man of the match. Winnerspark goalie Makweni Mayala also put in a good performance .

"Obviously, I'm excited that my goal has helped my club to qualify for the quarterfinals of such a big tournament.

"I want to continue working hard to ensure that we go further in this competition. We played as a unit," Maleka told Sowetan.
