COSATU general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi and International Relations and Cooperation Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane yesterday distanced themselves from the 2010 World Cup bonuses.
Vavi and Nkoana-Mashabane are among the country's top government and soccer officials who stand to pocket millions as board members of the Fifa 2010 Local Organising Committee (LOC).
The two serve on the LOC board with Transport Minister Sbu Ndebele, soccer boss Kaizer Motaung, Human Settlements Minister Tokyo Sexwale, Home Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, Justice and Constitutional Development Minister Jeff Radebe and Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa. Last night both said they did not need to profit from the spoils of the soccer showpiece.
This comes after Sowetan revealed yesterday that the former Safa executive committee, led by Molefi Oliphant as president and Orlando Pirates boss Irvin Khoza as his deputy, voted to reward members of the LOC board 10percent, while Safa executives stood to pocket fivepercent of the estimated R500million to R1billion World Cup windfall.
Safa regional structures were to be given a paltry fivepercent. While all ministers remained mum, Vavi and Cosatu said benefiting from the funds meant for local soccer development was tantamount to looting.
Cosatu spokesperson Patrick Craven said: "We want to state categorically that he (Vavi) would not have accepted the money. We welcome the decision by the new Safa executive to abandon the plan. It would have been grossly unfair."
Motaung denied knowledge of the bonuses but failed to say whether he would accept the money.
Safa CEO Leslie Sedibe is also a member of the board.
Last year Khoza, the chairperson of the PSL, raked in at least R30million in bonuses from soccer.
Khoza, Motaung, executive member Mato Madlala, former chief executive Trevor Phillips and consultant Peter Mancer are to receive R50million for their role in securing the R500million Absa sponsorship deal and the R1,6billion TV deal.
Safa said last night: "At this stage, the council has yet to discuss and take key decisions on any funds."
