Mohale Madibo, a former police constable, told the Vereeniging circuit court yesterday that he did not know why he shot and killed Captain Meshack Kalake.
Judge Brian Spilg convicted Madibo after he pleaded guilty to killing Kalake on January 11 2008 at the Lenasia South police station where both were stationed.
Madibo said he fired all the bullets in his service pistol at Kalake after the deceased had reprimanded him for drinking on duty.
"I was angry that he wanted to discipline me. He had threatened to dismiss me after he found an empty beer bottle in the state vehicle I was driving at the time," Madibo said.
He said he had lied to Kalake that he knew nothing about the empty beer bottle and claimed that a colleague was involved instead.
"Kalake said I had an attitude and he would discipline me. He also said that he had powers to dismiss me. I was scared and thought about my children, job and debts. He went to the office of then Superintendent Petrus Scheepers, where I believed he was going to report me.
"I pulled out my service pistol and started firing at him. Scheepers heard the gunshots and came towards me. I pointed the gun at him. Scheepers shot me. I woke up in hospital," Madibo said.
Prosecutor JP Maree said according to the doctor's report Madibo's mouth reeked of alcohol when he was admitted to hospital.
"Disciplined police officers do not operate like you did," Maree said.
"You are the author of your own misfortunes. You had no reason whatsoever to shoot Kalake.
You terminated his service on the police force by killing him."
Madibo will be sentenced on Monday.
