Allan Stott of Piranha Security, the company that attended the scene where baby Marzaan Kruger and her minder Francina Sekhu were brutally assaulted, said house owners should be very careful about who works on their property.
"In 60percent of robberies, when people have had someone working on the property, it turns out that one of the workers is involved or gave information to someone who is involved," Stott said yesterday.
Baby Kruger and Sekhu were attacked last Thursday when three men allegedly robbed the house.
One of the men, Mozambican Chakhoma Machaba, 28, reportedly befriended Sekhu while the men did renovations on the Kruger family home in Robindale, Randburg.
Baby Kruger was still sedated in the Sandton Medi-Clinic a week after being assaulted.
"Her condition is the same. She is serious but stable and there has been no change since Wednesday," hospital spokesperson Liezl Furlong said.
Two men, Nelson Maphosa, 28, and Geraldt Nyantumbo, 25, were arrested for the attack.
They were charged with attempted murder and robbery with aggravated circumstances but Machaba is still at large.
Gauteng police spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Eugène Opperman said Machaba was the main suspect.
Stott said service contractors, including builders, plumbers and garden services, regularly employed workers they did not know to help out on properties.
"Chances are that there is at least one illegal immigrant among the guys they pick up," he said. "How do you know that person is not a thug?"
Johan Burger, a researcher at the Pretoria Institute of Security Studies, said there was usually a link between workers who worked on a site and a robbery that occurs at the same place within a certain time frame.
But he said no research had been done to establish statistics on the matter. - Sapa
