Maritzburg United keen to sign Mbesuma

AFTER staving off relegation from the Absa Premiership in the recently completed season, Maritzburg United are beefing up their squad for the 2010-2011 campaign.

Sowetan has learnt that United's German coach, Ernst Middendorp, is courting Moroka Swallows' Zambian attacker Collins "Ntofontofo" Mbesuma, a former Kaizer Chiefs star.

Other players who are believed to be on Middendorp's wanted list are Santos's Tyrone Arendse and the talented Manqoba "Shakes" Ngwenya from Mamelodi Sundowns.

Mbesuma is one of the players likely to be dropped by Swallows after a below-par performance last season. Ngwenya is said to be frustrated at Sundowns, where he has failed to secure regular game time.

Middendorp was yesterday locked in a meeting with team management to identify the players he is keen to bring to the Pietermaritzburg side, according to our sources at the club.

The sources confirmed that there will be changes in United's playing personnel in the new season, especially in the attacking department.

"The coach has drawn up a list of players he wants for the new season and it includes strikers like Mbesuma," a source said.

"I know many people would argue that Mbesuma failed to live up to expectations at Moroka Swallows, but people should be aware of Middendorp's capabilities of working with the players.

"He can help a player like Mbesuma to regain his goalscoring touch. He has that ability. Again, Swallows and United are two different clubs."
