Care centre kids to rub shoulders with Rooney

MCDONALD'S has adopted Soweto's Rena le Lona centre where the fast food outlet selected five children to serve as player escorts for England during the 2010 World Cup.

Rena le Lona (We are with you) is an after-school care centre in Diepkloof where former Bafana Bafana star John "Shoes" Moshoeu is the patron.

The centre caters for 123 children. It focuses on helping and developing orphans and vulnerable children who have either been affected or infected by HIV.

The five lucky player escorts for the Wayne Rooney-led England are Lindiwe Kwayiza, Rethabile Hamla, Zinzi Qhaba, Siyabonga Qwabe and Joao Cossa. McDonald's donated soccer playing equipment to the centre on Monday and launched the Coach the Coaches Programme.

The joint initiative with the SA Schools Football Association will be led by Bafana assistant coach Pitso Mosimane. He visited the UK for first-hand information on the work done by the England Football Association and McDonald's in the training of coaches.

Moshoeu, the McDonald's Player Escort Legend for the World Cup, said "the support has brought joy to the children at the centre, many of whom are involved in soccer".
