That a public carrier must comply with safety standards stipulated by law is paramount. For their part, commuters expect public transport to operate within the parameters of the law at all times.

That said, it is disturbing that some companies still use unroadworthy buses or improperly documented buses.

The impounding of 11 SA Roadlink buses for mechanical faults and a lack of safety inspection paperwork by authorities in the past fortnight is a case in point. Many Roadlink buses have been pulled off the road by authorities in the past, raising questions about its attitude to road safety.

How will the issue of safety of buses be resolved, is the lingering - if not troubling - question.
