The family of late ANC KwaZulu-Natal Midlands leader Harry Gwala plan to have a joyful celebration in recognition of his award.

He was among the 34 South Africans who were recognised by President Jacob Zuma for their contribution and bravery at a Freedom Day ceremony that was held in Pretoria on Tuesday.

Gwala was honoured posthumously with the order of Mendi for bravery and his son, Linda Gwala, was at the ceremony to receive the gold award.

Lindiwe Gwala (daughter of Harry Gwala) told Sowetan yesterday that the family was planning to hold a big celebration as soon as they return to the family home in Pietermaritzburg.

Gwala had played a huge role in the fight for freedom. He died in 1995.

Another KwaZulu-Natal Gift of the Givers Foundation founder Imtiaz Suliman received the Order of Baobab, silver, for the work that his group has done as a relief agency in disaster areas.
