25 make the cut for Idols

TWENTY-FIVE aspiring musicians in Gauteng made it through to the next phase of the Idols competition.

The wannabes were given gold tickets by the judges on Tuesday night after a series of performances that started at the weekend.

Khan Morbee, lead singer of The Parlotones and one of the judges, said yesterday: "It was absolutely worth the trip. It's a fascinating process. We saw some amazing talent, but of course the big question is whether there will be career longevity for any of them.

"I look forward to this competition unearthing a major star that will surpass the Idols brand."

Another judge, Gareth Cliff of 5FM, said: "The talent was breathtaking."

The Gauteng winners now join the 20 from Durban and 27 from Cape Town at Sun City next month on dates still to be announced.

Now that the auditions are over in Gauteng the Idols tour moves to Boardwalk Shopping Centre in Port Elizabeth on Sunday.

On May 8 they will be at the Windmill Entertainment Centre in Bloemfontein.

The competition is open to South Africans aged 16 to 30.

The overall winner will walk away with a brand new Ford Figo and R500000, courtesy of Ford SA and M-Net, as well as a recording contract with Sony Music.
