Goliath down

WHATEVER language the people of Serbia speak, they are sure to have something close to the biblical David and Goliath tale.

So Kaizer Chiefs head coach Vladimir Vermezovic, born in Belgrade on June 30 1963, must have grown up knowing the story of "a nine-foot soldier from Gath, who bragged that he could beat any Israelite soldier" and how David, a mere shepherd who believed in God, brought him down.

Did Vermezovic bring this life-long lesson into their Nedbank Cup game with minnows FC Cape Town? Of course not.

As he strolled majestically onto the park, leading his troops to an assured win, the Serb had all but forgotten about David.

Maybe the wisdom of the Good Book was too much for the secular Vermezovic. But couldn't he at least have gone into the match with a more earthly "once bitten twice shy" approach?

As always: David 2; and Goliath 0.
