ROME - Roger Federer has entered the doubles tournament at the Rome Masters with Swiss Davis Cup teammate Yves Allegro.

Federer is playing his first tournament on clay since winning his first French Open title last year. Federer and Allegro were given a wild card, and will open against Johan Brunstrom of Sweden and Jean-Julien Rojer of the Netherlands Antilles.

In singles, the top-ranked Federer has a first-round bye, but has been drawn into the same half of the draw as Rafael Nadal, setting up a possible semifinal meeting between the two favourites. The tournament begun yesterday.

l The Wimbledon preparation of Kim Clijsters was heavily compromised yesterday after doctors determined she tore a muscle in her foot during a Fed Cup singles win against Estonia.

Doctors say Clijsters will be out for six weeks, a timetable that would see her missing the French Open and possibly not having enough time to regain form for Wimbledon, which begins on June 21. -AP-DPA
