Chance for lawbreakers

THE apparent public spat between Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development Jeff Radebe and national director of public prosecutions Menzi Simelane is disturbing.

The two are reportedly in disagreement over the organisation of the arms of the country's law.

Their differences in other quarters are downplayed as mere semantics.

The public out there is worried. The lawbreakers, on the other hand, might see a window of opportunity to escape justice.

Why not, when the lawmakers are at each others throats?

Simelane has been at the helm of the country's public prosecutions for less than a year and has been in the news for all the wrong reasons.

About a month ago he controversially told state prosecutors in the Molemo "Jub Jub" Maarohanye murder trial not to oppose the bail application of the hip-hop artist.

Following that he went on to ruffle more feathers by ordering the "reassignment" of the country's top high courts prosecutors to lower courts.

In his latest rantings he is reportedly planning to "disband" the leading crime-busting assets forfeiture unit, a move that has made Radebe see red.

The move has resulted in the unit's head, Willie Hofmeyr, saying Simelane needed a refresher course in law.

What an embarrassment!
