Sassa reviews social grant beneficiaries

OVER 800000 letters have been sent to social grant beneficiaries notifying them that their status was being reviewed and that their payments could be suspended, the SA Social Security Agency (Sassa) said yesterday.

OVER 800000 letters have been sent to social grant beneficiaries notifying them that their status was being reviewed and that their payments could be suspended, the SA Social Security Agency (Sassa) said yesterday.

Another 600000 letters had been sent informing beneficiaries that their grants had lapsed. These included those converted from disability to old age, spokesperson Moabi Pitsi said in a statement.

He said social grants beneficiaries were periodically reviewed.

Only those who had received the registered letters should make enquiries at Sassa offices, Pitsi said.

"Over the past months, an increasing number of beneficiaries have flocked to our offices to conduct reviews and life certification for their grants," he said.

The review process established whether beneficiaries' financial or medical situations had changed and that they were still alive.

It also updated their residential particulars, said Pitsi.

He said beneficiaries due for reviews would receive a notice within three months of the review indicating at which Sassa office it would be conducted.

Should they not undergo a review and life certification within six months of receiving that letter, their grant would lapse. - Sapa
